A Look into Anxiety During Exams
Every student experiences anxiety at some point in their educational journey. Anxiety during exams, informally known as “exam anxiety,” is a phenomenon observed in many people ranging from students in elementary school to pupils in graduate schools. Knowing the triggers, signs, and management techniques of exam anxiety is important for students, teachers, and parents.
Triggers Of Exam Anxiety –
1. Fear of Failure : Fear of failure is the leading cause of anxiety for a majority of students. Most students put pressure on themselves or their peers and hence experience doom in case they fall short to expectations.
2. Perfectionism : Students who consider themselves “perfectionists” often tend to set high standards for themselves and are prone to experience anxiety when they know they cannot achieve what is deemed perfect. This sort of mindset can put an individual in constant worry because they are not able to live up to their own ideals.
3. Lack Of Preparation : One of the most common triggers of anxiety is the feeling of being unprepared for a test. Students often deal with anxiety because they haven’t studied or prepared for an exam which heightens the sense of panic.
4. Past Experiences : Past experiences with tests contribute to exam anxiety. A history of negative emotions, such as failing or panicking during a test, often leads to test anxiety.
5. High Stakes : Placing high importance on a test often causes anxiety. Tests that come with high stakes, like college entrance exams or final assessments, elevate stress levels.
