What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is your own worth in your totality in your own eyes. It is like seeing yourself in a mirror daily. It’s the image that you have about yourself.
High or low self-esteem determines how much you believe you deserve success and happiness in your everyday life.
You are actually 4 people in 1 :
  • What you actually are today,
  • What you think you are,
  • What others think you are, and
  • What you want to be tomorrow.
All these 4 circles are different from each other to a very large degree in most of the people. That’s why they remain utterly-butterly confused.
The actual truth is the first circle, ie. what you actually are. The more other circles match this reality the more comfortable you will be about your life and higher will be your self-esteem………

Can you explain more clearly please?

Let us give some marks to your self-esteem out of 10. Yes, yes, such things cannot be quantified. But just for example sake, let’s do this exercise of 3 interesting questions about your own life :

Question #1

So 10 is the highest score and 1 is the lowest possible score. See your own life for the last 10-15 years. When did you feel very, very good about yourself? What was your self-esteem at that time? It must have been very, very high.
Similarly, when did you feel very, very poor or bad about yourself? What was your self-esteem at that time? It must have been very, very low.
Thus, you get a range of your self-esteem from the lowest to the highest. It may be 2-8, 1-9, 4-7, 6-8 or 7-9 or some such range………

Question #2

Now let’s do the same thing for your happiness – with happiness including everything like your health, wealth, family, social status, relationships, etc.
So 10 is the highest score and 1 is the lowest possible score. See your own life for the last 10-15 years. When did you feel very, very happy and on the top emotionally in your life? What was your happiness level at that time? It must have been very, very high.
Similarly, when did you feel very, very unhappy about your life in general? What was your happiness level at that time? It must have been very, very low.
Thus, you get a range of your happiness from the lowest to the highest. It may be 2-8, 1-9, 4-7, 6-8 or 7-9 or some such range………

Question #3

Do you find any co-relation between the range of your self-esteem and your happiness?
  • If you have been very honest with yourself, then you’ll discover that both match each other more or less!
For example, your self-esteem range may be 4-8 and happiness range may be 5-7; or it may be 2-7 and 1-8 or any such numbers………

What does it mean?

  • Here is the secret : your self-esteem is the master key or the governor of your happiness and success, not outer circumstances or other people.
If your self-esteem is high then sub-consciously you believe d-e-e-e-e-e-p inside you that you actually deserve more happiness, whatever may be the outer circumstances.
Conversely, if your self-esteem is low then sub-consciously you believe d-e-e-e-e-e-p inside you that you actually deserve less happiness, whatever may be the outer circumstances.
Further, when you sub-consciously believe that you deserve more happiness, then automatically you become more positive. You start attracting more success in various fields.
The opposite is equally true if you believe you deserve less happiness. This is the Law of Attraction.
  • So you see that your outer world’s success and relationships are just a reflection of your inner self-esteem. Consistently having high self-esteem is the Master Key to your whole life’s success and happiness………

How and when does self-esteem develop in us?

It starts developing by about 4-6 weeks of age in the new-born baby.
  • When the growing child is hugged, loved or appreciated, then his self-esteem becomes stronger.
  • Conversely, when the growing child is criticized, compared with others or condemned because of any reason, then his self-esteem becomes weaker.
Any verbal or physical punishment, sickness, sexual assault, poverty, failures plus very strict elders and teachers tremendously bring down the net self-esteem of the innocent growing child.
  • Additionally, dysfunctional or broken family background like an alcoholic parent, frequent father-mother arguments, constant financial worries, etc. also devastate the child’s self-esteem………

What are the effects of all this?

The net effects are life-long. The scars and appreciations both show their effects life-long very silently.
Finally what you get is a net result of these positive and negative factors. It’s like having an inner reservoir of self-esteem for your whole life – yes, your whole life.
  • If the reservoir was mostly full since childhood then all your life you will bounce back very fast from your setbacks and difficulties. Life will be quite happy and successful then.
  • On the contrary, if the reservoir was quiet empty since childhood then all your life you will bounce back quite late from your setbacks and difficulties. Life will be quite miserable then………

Then what can I do now to increase my self-esteem?

  • 95% of your self-esteem is developed by the time you cross your teen age :
  • 50% of your self-esteem is developed by the age of 5 years,
  • 80% of your self-esteem is developed by the age of 8 years,
  • 95% of your self-esteem is developed by the age of 18 years,
  • 5% of your self-esteem is left to be developed after the age of 18 years.
Nevertheless, this 5% power is sufficient to change your whole life if you learn the right techniques of mastering your mind………

How to increase my self-esteem from today then?

There is no one way. You have to work on yourself from various angles every day slowly and steadily.
As your self-esteem increases your inner happiness as well as your outer success will also increase in direct proportion.
